Turn a broad topic into an observable learning outcome.

A short example of how a lesson can move from a useful idea to something a learner can put into practice. The teaching example below is original and illustrative.

By the end of the lesson, the learner can turn a broad subject into an observable outcome and name evidence that shows when it is complete.

Teaching

A topic names the subject. An outcome describes the work.

“Feedback” is a topic: it tells you what the lesson is about, but not what someone will be able to do. An outcome uses an observable verb and points to a result that makes progress visible.

A useful outcome answers two questions: what will the learner do, and what could they produce or demonstrate so that completion is clear?

Generic example: writing useful feedback

Instead of “understand feedback,” a learner might aim to write two specific comments on a draft and revise one comment so the writer has a clear next step.
